What To Do If You’re Being Pulled Over by an Unmarked Police Vehicle and You’re Scared

Getting pulled over is stressful. Getting pulled over by an unmarked vehicle can feel terrifying. If you’re unsure whether the person behind you is a real officer, here’s what you should do.

1. Slow Down & Don’t Panic

Do not speed away.

Instead:

  • Turn on your hazard lights to show you see them.
  • Reduce your speed.
  • Stay calm.

You are signaling that you intend to comply — you’re just making sure you’re safe.

2. Call 911 Immediately

Tell dispatch:

  • Your location
  • That an unmarked vehicle is trying to pull you over
  • That you are scared and want confirmation

Ask them:

“Can you confirm this is a real officer conducting a traffic stop?”

Stay on the phone until you get confirmation.

3. Drive to a Well-Lit, Public Area

If you’re on a dark road or isolated highway:

  • Continue driving at a reasonable speed.
  • Head toward a gas station, busy parking lot, or police station.

A legitimate officer will understand safety concerns.

4. Keep Your Doors Locked

When stopped:

  • Keep your doors locked.
  • Crack your window slightly.
  • Ask for badge number and agency if needed.

You can verify this information with dispatch.

If someone becomes aggressive when you ask for identification, that is a red flag.

5. Document the Situation

If safe:

  • Start recording on your phone.
  • Share your location with someone you trust.
  • Note the vehicle description and license plate.

What You Should NOT Do

Do not:

  • Speed away recklessly
  • Ignore lights and sirens completely
  • Engage in a high-speed chase

There’s a difference between fleeing and protecting yourself.
Turning on hazards and driving to a safe location is not the same as running.

If Your Rights Are Violated

If you were:

  • Arrested after trying to verify identity
  • Threatened for asking for confirmation
  • Stopped by someone impersonating an officer
  • Injured during the stop

You may have legal options.

Protect yourself first.
Confirm the officer through dispatch.
Document everything.

Your safety matters.
