John 3:16 Mission: A Legacy of Hope in Tulsa for Homeless Citizens

In the heart of Tulsa, there is a place where people without a home can find safety, a meal, and encouragement. That place is John 3:16 Mission.

The Mission began in 1952 with a man named Rev. Bob Geisinger. At first, Geisinger trained to be an opera singer and even lived in New York City to chase that dream. But he felt a strong call to do something different, something that would change lives. He came back to Tulsa and opened a rescue mission in a converted fish market downtown. On the very first night, more than 40 men showed up needing food and a place to stay.

From that small start, the Mission grew into one of Tulsa’s best-known shelters. Every day, the Mission serves hot meals, offers clean clothes, and provides a safe bed for men who would otherwise be on the streets. Guests can also attend chapel services and meet with staff who care about their future.

But John 3:16 Mission is about more than short-term help. They run long-term recovery programs for men and women, programs called New Creation and Renew. These programs help people overcome addiction, find steady work, and build a new life. The Mission also supports families in crisis, offering food and resources to keep them from losing their homes.

What started in an old fish market has become a lasting part of Tulsa’s story. For over 70 years, John 3:16 Mission has shown that compassion, faith, and community can turn despair into hope.
