Slip and Fall

What You Need to Know

Slip and fall cases may sound simple, but proving them takes three key things:

  1. An injury or damages – You must have been hurt or suffered losses.

  2. Negligence by the property ownerThe owner failed to fix or warn about a hazard.

  3. Insurance coverage – There has to be enough coverage to pay out fair compensation.

Common Causes of Slip and Fall Accidents

and fall accidents can happen anywhere, but most claims involve hazards that could have been prevented:

  • Spilled liquids or food
Grocery stores and restaurants are common sites for spills. If employees don’t clean up quickly, shoppers or guests can slip and get hurt.
  • Water leaks
Hidden leaks in kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry areas often cause puddles. Until fixed, they put visitors at serious risk.
  • Broken or unsafe stairs
Old or poorly maintained stairs can give way. Property owners should block off damaged stairways until repairs are made.
  • Clutter in walkways
Boxes, cords, tools, or other items left in walkways are dangerous. Both property owners and workers must keep paths clear.
  • Loose handrails
Many people, especially seniors, rely on handrails. If they’re unstable, serious injuries can result.
  • Poor lighting
Dim or missing lights in stairwells, hallways, and outdoor paths make it easy to miss hazards.
  • Unsafe landscaping and pavement
Cracks in sidewalks, wet leaves, or uneven pavement can cause unexpected falls if not maintained.

Injuries from Slip and Fall Accidents

Falls can cause everything from minor scrapes to life-changing injuries. Some of the most common include:

  • Head and brain injuries – A blow to the head can lead to a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Broken bones – Wrists, arms, ankles, and hips are especially at risk.
  • Spinal cord injuries – Damage to the spine can cause paralysis or loss of mobility.
  • Facial injuries – Broken teeth, eye injuries, and scarring can result if the face hits the ground.
  • Cuts and lacerations – Falling onto glass, metal, or debris can leave deep wounds.

For older adults, these injuries can be devastating, sometimes preventing them from living independently again.
