A More Hopeful Future

Domestic Violence/Domestic Abuse is a horrible and heartbreaking reality for many.
Not only is it an experience women and men both endure, children can also be caught in the crossfire.

According to https://ncadv.org/statistics, more than 10 million women and men are victims of physical abuse by an intimate partner each year.  Let me repeat that, MORE THAN 10 million women and men are victims of physical abuse by an intimate partner EACH YEAR.  This insanely high number does not include rape, stalking, homicide, the impact on children witnessing such acts, the economic impact, OR the physical/mental/emotional impact of the individuals being abused.

I witnessed the “aftermath” of domestic violence first-hand with an old friend of mine.  Lisa’s, now ex-husband Chad, tried to kill her by choking her in their kitchen.  He also hit her multiple times along with other abusive behavior.  When one of Lisa’s young teenage sons tried to step-in to save/protect her, Chad physically assaulted him as well, including choking him.

Lisa and her son weren’t only left with physical injuries, they were left with significant mental and emotional anguish.  Lisa struggled for years trying to navigate her way through her experience, but as much as she struggled, she fought ten times harder to find peace and embrace hope for the future.  She was able to not only accept the support from friends and family, she used the resources provided by the community and local outreaches.  Lisa also sought help for her son, who is doing very well.

Today, Lisa is doing great.  She was able to finish college, something her ex-husband forbid her to do, and now works in a position where she gives back to the community daily.  Despite everything she’s been through, Lisa lives a vibrant, healthy, and stable life.

Unfortunately, Lisa is one of several people I know that have lived or are living this reality.
Guaranteed you know one, if not more than one, person as well.
Maybe that person is you.

I want you to know-I need you to know-you are not alone, and there is hope for you and your situation. If you’re not comfortable speaking with family, a friend, pastor, co-worker… if you don’t feel there’s anyone you can trust, reach out to the website and or phone numbers below (which are also great resources for us that think and or know someone caught in such circumstances).  Your life matters.  YOU MATTER.

Domestic Violence/Domestic Abuse is not strictly physical abuse.   Everyone’s situation is different.  Click here for a detailed description of Signs of Abuse.
